HUH COMMUNITY WORKS EMR PROJECT
What is Community Works EMR?
The EMR Community Works Project is a transformative initiative at Howard University Hospital designed to implement a single, unified, and reliable Electronic Medical Record (EMR) platform that will seamlessly connect our ambulatory care network with our acute care hospital. This integration will ensure that every patient’s health information is accessible, accurate, and up-to-date at every stage of their care journey—from outpatient visits to hospital stays and follow-up appointments.
By replacing fragmented systems with one robust platform, the new EMR will enhance care coordination, reduce duplication of tests and procedures, and improve communication across all care teams. Clinicians will have real-time access to comprehensive patient records, enabling faster decision-making, more personalized treatment plans, and improved patient safety. For patients, this means smoother transitions of care, fewer administrative barriers, and an overall better healthcare experience.
The project is a major undertaking, managed by Oracle Health in close collaboration with the HUH IT Department and HealthNET Consultants. It meets all regulatory and legislative requirements while also providing powerful tools for measuring outcomes, tracking quality metrics, and supporting population health initiatives.
Beyond operational improvements, the EMR Community Works Project represents a cultural shift toward innovation, efficiency, and equity in healthcare delivery. By leveraging advanced data capabilities, HUH can better identify and address health disparities, ensuring that our care is equitable and inclusive.
This investment is not simply about technology—it is about empowering our providers, strengthening our infrastructure, and honoring our mission to serve the community with excellence and compassion. Once live, the system will support HUH’s vision of a fully connected healthcare environment that delivers safe, coordinated, and high-quality care to every patient, every time.
The EMR Community Works Project is more than a system upgrade—it’s the foundation for the future of healthcare at Howard University Hospital.
The HUH EMR Community Works Project brings a range of powerful features and benefits that will transform how we deliver, document, and coordinate care. Key highlights include:
• Integrated EHR/Patient Record
The new platform provides a fully integrated Electronic Health Record (EHR) that unifies patient data across all points of care. From outpatient visits to inpatient admissions, every detail—diagnoses, test results, medications, and treatment plans—will be stored in a single, comprehensive record. This eliminates data silos, improves accuracy, and ensures that providers have the complete picture at every encounter.
• Same EHR as Other Customers
HUH will be using the same EHR system trusted by a wide network of healthcare organizations nationwide. This creates consistency in workflows, technology, and standards, while ensuring our system is supported by a proven, widely adopted platform.
• System Built on Model (Ideal) Processes
The EMR is configured using evidence-based, industry best practices—known as “model processes”—to streamline clinical workflows, reduce redundancies, and optimize efficiency. These processes are designed to reflect the highest standards of patient care, regulatory compliance, and operational effectiveness.
• Clinically Driven Revenue Cycle
The platform integrates clinical documentation with billing and coding functions, ensuring that revenue cycle processes are accurate, timely, and directly aligned with the care provided. This reduces administrative burdens, minimizes errors, and enhances reimbursement accuracy.
• Designed for Smaller Healthcare Organizations
Tailored specifically for community hospitals, critical access facilities, and specialty providers, the system is scalable and adaptable to HUH’s unique needs. It delivers the functionality of a large-scale EMR while remaining agile enough for our operational environment.
• Network of Hundreds of Other Healthcare Organizations
Through this platform, HUH joins a connected network of hundreds of other hospitals and health systems. This creates opportunities for collaboration, peer learning, and data exchange, enhancing both the patient experience and the hospital’s ability to adopt innovative practices quickly.
